McAleenan appeared on CBS This Morning to discuss the rise of white supremacist attacks and the department’s role in monitoring and mitigating the role of extremist violence in the United States. Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security created a new office for targeted violence and terrorism prevention. One of the goals of the new force was to prevent racially motivated attacks. A Los Angeles Times report published on Monday stated that office is much smaller and less equipped than a similar anti-terrorism program in the Obama administration....

Last month, the Major Cities Chiefs Association issued a mid-year report for violent crimes across several cities. “Compared to 2019 midyear figures, MCCA member cities have experienced a 50% increase in homicides and a roughly 36% increase in aggravated assaults,” the Major Cities Chiefs Association said in a press release accompanying the report. “These shocking numbers demonstrate how the sustained increase in violent crime has disproportionately impacted major urban areas....

The deceased penguins were found by the shore near Simon’s Town on Monday. Officials also found numerous dead bees in the same area. The bee stings were the only signs of injury on the penguins’ bodies and were found around the eyes and flippers during post-mortem examinations. One of the birds was stung 27 times. African penguins are considered endangered, with a total population of around 50,000 left in the world....

“Nothing is more important than the rule of law in Hong Kong and I hope the community at large will agree with us, with these violent acts we have seen, it is right for us to condemn it and we hope society will return to normal as soon as possible,” Lam told a 4 a.m. press conference. Cable TV is now available in about two thirds of the country’s prisons and tens of thousands of inmates spend hours each day hooked up to headphones connected to sets in their cells. In the past, TV watching was usually restricted to communal sets in group dayrooms; there was limited choice of programs and fights were more common. With cable, inmates can select from a broader range of programs. Prison officials say they feel safer because there’s less potential for violence when prisoners watch either alone or in small groups....

Police searched 67-year-old David Fuller’s home and found evidence of the two women’s deaths. They also discovered roughly four million images and video recordings of the abuse at two hospitals in southeast England from a period of more than 12 years, the AP reported. Health Secretary Sajid Javid told lawmakers about the findings while announcing the inquiry. He said that of the 100 victims found so far, 81 had been formally identified....

Amsterdam police confirmed on Twitter that medical personnel were now taking care of the suspect after his body was examined for explosives. The police said that they stopped the suspect by striking him with a police car, and video footage posted on Twitter by a Netherlands-headquartered news agency appeared to show the vehicle colliding with the suspect during the pursuit. Video clips posted on local broadcaster AT5’s website earlier Tuesday appeared to show one person being held at gunpoint inside the store, Reuters reported....

Confederate monuments became the targets of protests against systemic racism and police brutality in the wake of the May death of George Floyd, a Black man who died while in the custody of Minneapolis police officers. Demonstrators defaced and attempted to destroy the statues because of their connection with the American Civil War. Some lawmakers removed the monuments from public spaces in an effort to prevent further damage. In a Thursday statement, Rush cited the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia where confrontations white nationalists and demonstrators resulted in the death of counterprotester Heather Heyer....

Update 7:05 p.m. EST: The Safe Banking Act of 2021 passed the House Monday evening with overwhelming bipartisan support 321-101, receiving the required two-thirds majority. All 215 House Democrats who voted chose “yea” as well as 106 Republicans who also voted “yea.” The 101 “nay” votes were all House Republicans. Three Democrats and five Republicans did not vote Monday. McHenry’s quip isn’t likely to change the large majority of House lawmakers from both parties who on Monday expressed vehement support for the SAFE Banking Act and blasted the federal government’s ongoing “war on drugs....
