Santorum’s effort to embrace the other side has won him the support of at least one noted Democrat: Zell Miller. The retired Georgia Senator has launched something called Democrats For Santorum, aimed at convincing wary Dems to give the guy another chance. “I believe in his leadership more than anyone else I served with in the U.S. Senate,” Miller said in his announcement. “Rick Santorum was more than just a good friend to me, he was someone I looked up to for guidance.” Well that’s one Dem who’ll vote for Santorum–or would, if he wasn’t from five states away. But if the Senator is counting on Miller to woo other Democrats over to his side, he’d better hope they have short memories, or at least bad internet connections. Now a lobbyist, Miller is best known for breaking ranks with the party and delivering a scorched earth address at the Republican Convention in 2004. In the speech, he trashed his party, saying “our nation is being torn apart and made weaker because of the Democrats’ manic obsession to bring down our Commander in Chief.” If Miller can just scrounge up a few million Pennsylvania Democrats who think the same way in the next five days, Santorum will have the race all locked up.
