Ambience: The hotel, along the Prinsengracht Canal, is marked only with a gold nameplate on the door. The sitting room has comfy couches and intriguing objets d’art. The gray walls and subtle prints present a soothing haven from the bustle outside.

Rooms: Each room is named after–and takes its inspiration from–a famous artist or musician. Candles and a stand with sheet music decorate the Franz Liszt room, and the Picasso room features a reprint of one of his cubist works. Each room has a Bang & Olufsen DVD player, and blankets woven especially for the hotel by a Welsh craftsman.

Amenities: The staff is almost embarrassingly accommodating, bending over backward to take care of every detail. They can arrange in-room spa service as well as private tours of the meandering canals.

Food: The hotel does not offer dinner. Breakfast is simple but stylish; coffee is served with real cream and the fresh fruit is presented on lovely blue Delft china.
