Applewhite served as the Cougars’ offensive coordinator the last two seasons under Tom Herman, who took the job at Texas on Nov. 26. Houston hired Applewhite instead of Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, who was reportedly in the mix.

Houston was prolific on offense this season under Applewhite. The Cougars averaged more than 40 points a game (10th nationally) a year ago and ranked 15th in passing (301.9 yards), 21st in scoring (38.0) and 34th in total offense (459.2) in 2016.

Applewhite played quarterback at Texas from 1998-2001 and was an assistant with the Longhorns from 2008-13.
