The Texans took a major step towards the postseason on Sunday, with a 24-21 road win over divisional rivals Tennessee Titans.

The win put Houston one game away from clinching the AFC South and could even overtake Kansas City if it wins its two remaining games and the Chiefs lose one of them.

According to FiveThirtyEight’s statistical projections, the win over Tennessee raised Houston’s chances of winning the division to 89 percent.

If the Texans win on Saturday, even a defeat against the Titans in Week 17 would be inconsequential for them, as they hold the tiebreaker over Tennessee because of a better division record.

With the Titans hosting a New Orleans Saints team looking to secure a first-round bye, the prospect of Tennessee winning out is far from straightforward.

The same, however, can be said about Houston’s trip to Tampa Bay as the Texans have been frustratingly inconsistent at times this season.

A road win over Kansas City in Week 6 was followed by a defeat against the Colts in Week 7, while a win over the New England Patriots in Week 13 was followed by a 38-24 thrashing at home at the hands of the Denver Broncos seven days later.

Winning on the road against a divisional rival that was on a four-game winning streak was the perfect response to the loss against Denver, but the way Houston handles Tampa Bay could be even more significant in terms of playoffs aspirations.

Like Tennessee, Tampa Bay is on a four-game winning streak and while its playoff hopes have long been extinguished, its offense has developed into a destructive weapon of late.

Tampa Bay ranks third in the NFL in both total offense and scoring offense with 400.1 yards and 29.7 points per game and have scored at least 35 points in three of their last four games—Houston has passed the 30-point mark just twice this season.

Jameis Winston’s failure to protect the ball continues to hamper him—he leads the NFL with 24 interceptions—but the first overall pick of the 2015 draft has shown signs of improvement in Bruce Arians’ first season in Florida.

Winston leads the NFL with 4,573 passing yards and his 30 touchdown passes are second only to Lamar Jackson’s tally of 33.

The Bucs quarterback had four touchdown passes in both of the last two games and Texans coach Bill O’Brien is well aware of the danger posed by the 25-year-old, who faces a Texans defense ranking 28th overall and 28 against the pass.

“Tampa Bay’s a very explosive team,” O’Brien said in his press conference on Monday. “They’re very, very good. Jameis Winston has thrown for 450 yards in two straight games. […] Winston is a great player. This guy was a number one draft pick [and] a Heisman Trophy winner. This guy has won a national championship. He’s a phenomenal player. He’s got a great arm [and] a lot of good players around him, so it’s going to be a big challenge for us.”

The Texans rank seventh in total offense and 10th in scoring offense this season but Deshaun Watson should relish going up against a defense that ranks 30th in the NFL against the pass.
