After 6 seasons on the air, Supergirl gave fans one final episode to bid farewell to the superhero and her friends.

The finale, titled “Kara,” was jam-packed with dramatic storylines and welcome returns from other characters.

Here, Newsweek breaks down the best moments from the finale and also looks back at what the cast have said about the show ending.

How did Supergirl come to an end?

One last fight

Supergirl and the Superfriends went up against Lex Luthor (John Cryer) and Nyxly (Peta Sergeant), after the villains’ fight with each other over shards of the Allstone started to sap Earth of the totem’s elements: hope, love, dreams, truth, destiny, humanity and courage.

Counteracting Luthor and Nyxly’s fight, Supergirl made a moving speech to the masses that was amplified with the help of Brainy (Jesse Rath) and Lena (Katie McGrath). It strengthened humanity, thus diminishing the Allstone’s powers.

However Luthor and Nyxly weren’t so easily defeated, and they brought in villains from past seasons to fight against the Superfriends, including Season 1’s Red Tornado and Supergirl’s evil alter-ego Overgirl.

The group fought off their adversaries as best they could, but it was Luthor’s hubris that led to his and Nyxly’s demise. He summoned a portal to the Phantom Zone to threaten Supergirl, but it resulted in him and his fellow villain being drawn into the abyss instead.

A wedding to remember

It wasn’t all about the fights in the finale, as we also got the wedding of Kara’s adoptive sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Dr. Kelly Olsen (Azie Tesfai).

Supergirl pulled out all the stops for the pair to celebrate their big day. Kara and Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) sang “We Belong” as the newlyweds walked down the aisle while J’onn J’onzz (David Harewood) officiated the ceremony.

The Martian Manhunter even sweetly wished them congratulations by writing it in the sky, and the wedding ended with a fun party to round it all off.

Welcome back, Cat Grant

The season 6 finale also saw the welcome return of one Cat Grant (played by Calista Flockhart), who made quite the stir when she spoke to her former assistant Kara on the phone and told her she always knew she was Supergirl.

Cat —in true Cat style— also said Kara shouldn’t keep her superhero identity a secret anymore and she should embrace her true self.

Kara decided to do just that and the show ended with Cat introducing her as Supergirl to the world.

What have the cast of Supergirl said about the show ending?

In October, lead star Benoist reflected on the show coming to an end in an interview with EW.com.

The actor said of filming the finale: “I definitely felt a different kind of closure when we wrapped on set, very bittersweet.

“I felt all the emotions you could feel in the last two weeks of shooting that show. But I think once the final episode airs, and I know that I really don’t have to go back up to Vancouver to shoot, that’s when it’ll probably set in.”

She added that her final week on the Supergirl set was “really intense, really emotional, really joyful and fun,” especially given so many characters had a chance to return one last time.

Leigh, meanwhile, told TVLine that the cast was “a hot mess” during the final weeks on the Vancouver set.

She explained: “Everybody’s crying. Everybody’s grateful and so appreciative…. Each day, you’re saying goodbye to somebody.”

Supergirl Season 1-6 is available to watch on The CW app.
