The video montage, shared by user Ambervscott, was posted with a message overlaid on the screen that read: “I will never forget how my husband treated me & baby during the 9 months I was pregnant.”
The clip was shared with a caption that read: “Not pictured: him rubbing my back/ tying my hair up all hours of the night [that] I spent over the toilet in my first [trimester] [crying floods of tears emoji].”
The first trimester of a pregnancy is “crucial to the normal development of the fetus,” explains the Johns Hopkins Medicine website. During this period, the fetus is most susceptible to damage from substances such as alcohol, drugs, certain medicines as well as illnesses.
The first trimester will also see women experience various physiological symptoms, because their bodies, as well as their baby’s, are rapidly changing during this period.
They may experience “extreme tiredness due to the physical and emotional demands of pregnancy,” while increased hormone levels may result in “mood swings” and “morning sickness,” which cause nausea and sometimes vomiting, notes Johns Hopkins Medicine.
A July 2016 study of 2,641 women in the Boston area, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Women’s Health, stated that nearly half of all infant deaths in the U.S. are “attributable to perinatal [the period between when you become pregnant and up to year after giving birth] conditions, including pregnancy complications, low birth weight, and prematurity.”
The study found “higher levels of antenatal anxiety, depression, and smoking among pregnant women who report low partner support” and its findings “add to mounting evidence that fathers and partners are influential in maternal psychological variables and smoking behavior during pregnancy.”
The study concluded that: “Partner support may be an important and potentially modifiable target for interventions to improve pregnancy outcomes.”
