The “Great Balls of Fire” artist, known for his pounding piano and country-inspired rock and roll sound, was reportedly in poor health for some time, though no cause of death has been announced.

His death was wrongfully reported by several outlets on Wednesday, his rep confirming at the time that he was still alive.

His publicist, Zach Farnum, wrote in a statement on Friday, “Lewis, perhaps the last true, great icon of the birth of rock ’n’ roll, whose marriage of blues, gospel, country, honky-tonk and raw, pounding stage performances so threatened a young Elvis Presley that it made him cry, has died.”

The statement added that “Judith, his seventh wife, was by his side when he passed away at his home in Desoto County, Mississippi, south of Memphis. He told her, in his final days, that he welcomed the hereafter, and that he was not afraid.”

Who Did Jerry Lee Lewis Marry?

Married a total of seven times, the outrageous rock and roll pioneer wed twice while he was still in his teens. In 1952 at the age of 16, he married Dorothy Barton, a preacher’s daughter, and their marriage lasted a total of 20 months.

His second marriage was to Jane Mitchum, but the validity of their relationship was questioned, as it was reported that they married shortly before his divorce with Barton was finalized. Still, they married in 1953 and were together until 1957. They had two children, Jerry Lee Lewis Jr. and Ronnie Guy Lewis.

In 1973, Jerry Lee Lewis Jr. died at the age of 19 in a car accident in Mississippi, according to the New York Times.

It was Lewis’ third wife that raised some eyebrows and nearly cost him his career. In 1958, news broke that Lewis had married Myra Gale Brown, the daughter of his bassist, J.W. Brown. Brown was reportedly 13 at the time, though Lewis insisted she was nearly 15 years old. The singer had been 22 when they wed.

At the time, Lewis faced intense criticism from many who condemned the union, and according to the BBC, he was booed off stage and performances were canceled. That year, an advertisement ran in Billboard with an open letter from Lewis that read, “I have in recent weeks been the center of a fantastic amount of publicity, of which none has been good….I hope that if I am washed up as an entertainer it won’t be because of this bad publicity.”

It was also discovered that his separation from his second wife, Mitchum, had not been finalized before he married Brown.

They had two children, Steve Allen Lewis and Phoebe Allen Lewis—Steve Allen died in 1962, drowning in a swimming pool. Brown and Lewis divorced in 1970, and in the divorce, Brown claimed she had been “subject to every type of physical and mental abuse imaginable.”

“If I was still married to Jerry, I’d probably be dead by now,” she told People magazine in 1989.

In 1971, Lewis married Jaren Elizabeth Gunn Pate, and the following year, they had a daughter, Lori Lee Lewis. Tragedy struck again though in 1982 when Pate drowned in a swimming pool just a few weeks before the pair’s divorce was finalized.

The rock and roll singer’s fifth marriage was to Shawn Stephens, and after just 77 days of marriage, Stephens overdosed at home and died.

His next marriage was to Kerrie McCarver, which lasted 21 years and ended in 2005. Together, they have one child, Jerry Lee Lewis III.

And in 2012, he married his seventh wife, Judith Brown—the ex-wife of Myra Gale Brown’s brother, to whom he was still married at the time of his death.

Did Jerry Lee Lewis Marry His Cousin?

Even more controversial than her age was the discovery that Myra Gale Brown was also Lewis’ first cousin once removed.

Brown told Medium in an interview in 2014 that the news of their marriage broke while on tour in the U.K.

“The only problem was that nobody told me anything,” Brown—more currently Williams—said. “So when a reporter asked me, Who are you? I was the one who let the big ol’ cat out of the bag. It was a perfect storm—it couldn’t have happened at a worse time, at a worse place. Everything just came together and a major explosion happened.”

In the same year, Lewis told the Wall Street Journal when asked about their marriage, “I probably would have rearranged my life a little bit different, but I never did hide anything from people. I just went on with my life as usual.”

What Ages Were Jerry Lee Lewis’ Wives When They Got Married?

Myra had certainly been the youngest of all of his wives, but Lewis married six other women who were nearly all younger than him.

His first wife, Barton, was also 16 when they married. It is unclear how old his second wife, Mitchum, had been when they married, though Lewis was only 16 or 17 at the time of their marriage.

His fourth wife, Pate, had been roughly 28 years old, and Shawn Stephens had been 25 at the time of her death, having only been married to Lewis for a few months.

His sixth wife, McCarver, had been 21 when she married Lewis within a year after Stephen’s death. Finally, Judith Brown was 62 when she married Lewis, 76.

Newsweek reached out to a representative for Lewis for comment.
