The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s approval rating took a hit after they quit the palace in January 2020 and plunged further following their Oprah Winfrey interview in March 2021.
There were then signs ill-will in the U.K. towards the couple might be fading after some high profile appearances in Fall 2021 but they slumped again in 2022.
Their biggest public appearance of the year so far came in June when they were part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, creating the possibility of a new boost to their reputations in the country they left behind.
However, the first polling since the celebrations, which marked 70 years of Elizabeth’s reign, shows only a limited improvement to their popularity, although there are reasons why the small uptick could be more positive than it initially appears.
Newly released YouGov data for the second quarter of 2022 shows Harry was liked by 34 percent of adult Brits and disliked by 41 percent, giving him a net approval of -7, four points higher than in the first quarter of the year.
Meghan was liked by 25 percent of adult Brits while 47 percent viewed her negatively, giving her a net rating of -22, three points higher than in the first quarter of the year.
However, the data is based on rolling research conducted throughout the three-month period, which included March, April and June.
That means some, though not all, of the research will have been conducted before the jubilee, though the Sussexes also had a busy April with a visit to the Netherlands for the Invictus Games.
The limited impact on their ratings comes after a dispute over their police protection led the couple to scale down their Platinum Jubilee visit.
Harry and Meghan only attended official jubilee events, which came with an offer of police protection, after their legal representative said in January it was not safe in the country without a Metropolitan Police security detail.
That left them restricted to the events the royals invited them to, and they were not given a spot on the iconic Buckingham Palace balcony with working royal family members.
Harry and Meghan brought their children with them but Archie and Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor did not make an appearance as they watched the queen’s Trooping the Color birthday parade on June 2.
They were then at a church service in the queen’s honor at St Paul’s Cathedral, in London, on June 3, before hosting a private first birthday party for Lilibet, at their Frogmore Cottage home, on June 4.
However, the queen herself did not make the church service and they were not seen with the 96-year-old monarch in public.
Harry and Meghan did meet the queen, and introduced Lilibet to her for the first time, however, the visit was in private and no pictures have been released.
Prince Harry used to enjoy sky-high popularity ratings in Britain, with up to 81 percent of the country viewing him positively at the time of his wedding to Meghan in May 2018, according to YouGov.
She too was liked by 55 percent of the British public in October 2019 but support for the couple appeared to decline from January 2020, when they announced they were quitting their royal duties.
Following the couple’s decision to relocate to north America, a YouGov poll showed 55 percent felt positively about Harry and 38 percent about Meghan.
By July 2021, four months after the Oprah Winfrey interview, 31 percent liked Harry and 32 percent liked Meghan.
The duchess recorded her lowest rating that August when she was liked by 26 percent but disliked by 65 percent, giving her a net rating at the time of -39.
Among the royals, only Prince Andrew is less popular than Meghan among adult Brits.
The couple are preparing to launch several commercial projects, including Meghan’s Archetypes podcast, Prince Harry’s memoir and the first Invictus Games documentary from their Netflix partnership.
