If you don’t see the ruler on your document, go to View > Show Ruler. You’ll see a line down your document from the ruler so you can see where on the paper your new indent will be. Each time you press Enter/Return on your keyboard, this new indentation will be applied. The general indentation rule for APA research papers is 1" margins on all sides. To apply this, highlight all existing text (if there is any) and drag the triangles in the ruler to 1 and 7 to create a 1" margin on the left and right.

The hanging indent is used more for emphasis in items or for longer quotations inserted in research papers. You’ll also need to apply hanging indents for all research paper bibliographies and works cited pages. [1] X Research source
